Novartis’ Integrated In Vivo Biology and Pharmacology research group in San Diego, California, is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative Research Scientist to apply cell biology and animal model systems to target validation and drug optimization efforts. This role will be involved in advancement of drug candidates from the project inception stage through clinical candidate selection. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of both in vitro and vivo biology, with demonstrated success in executing preclinical models for drug discovery. The ability to link preclinical and clinical readouts, utilizing methods such as ELISA, FACS, and qPCR will be key to success in this position. This individual will interact collaboratively with colleagues throughout Biomedical Research in these efforts, including to advance promising therapeutic candidates and technologies into Novartis’ drug development pipeline.
About the Role
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- A crucial role in the development of novel medicines for patients in a broad range of disease areas, including oncology, neuroscience, and cardiovascular disease
- Working with different therapeutic modalities such as small molecule drugs, siRNA, and biotherapeutics
- Collaborating with pharmacology teams to design and execute studies according to IACUC and Novartis guidelines
- Performing animal model studies and supporting ex vivo readouts
- Culturing cell lines and running in vitro assays to profile drug candidates
- Flexibility, adaptability and resilience to rapidly shifting priorities and timelines
- Diligence and tenacity optimizing and conducting complex in vivo and in vitro experiments concurrently to maximize output is critical
- Collaborating with other Novartis departments, external academic and business partners, and CROs to conduct research studies
What you’ll bring to the role:
- BS degree in Life Sciences Field, with 6-12 months bench research experience. Experience in a professional/industry (biotech, pharma) setting is highly desirable
- Proficiency in cell biology, qPCR, and ELISA-based assay methods
- Organized and independent self-starter and team-player with strong work ethics, community cohesion, values and behaviors
- Accountability from experimental execution and data analysis
- Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills
- Demonstrated experience working with mouse models is desirable
Desirable experience:
- Understanding of drug discovery optimization processes
- Enthusiasm to learn, courage and communication to work in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary, collaborative research environment
