Summary

Location: Cambridge, MA #LI-Onsite About the role: The Novartis Oncology Disease Area is seeking a highly motivated, creative, and collaborative scientist to join the Biological Chemistry (BC) group in a hands-on role to discover the next generation of innovative cancer treatments. We are an early-stage drug discovery team focused on understanding and exploiting the molecular mechanisms of novel cancer targets for the discovery, characterization and optimization of small molecule therapeutics.

About the Role

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and troubleshoot biochemical/biophysical assays using various detection technologies to identify and characterize cancer targets and small molecule modulators

  • Measure binding affinity, binding kinetics, and understand the mode of binding of ligands to proteins of interest

  • Assess and implement emerging cutting edge technologies and novel assay approaches to advance drug discovery programs

  • Contribute to medicinal chemistry drug discovery efforts to evaluate compound SAR and mode of action characterization

  • Communicate, collaborate and challenge assumptions to push scientific boundaries with a diverse team of cross-functional scientists

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $66,000 and $99,000 / year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/24 through 12/31/24, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.

Essential Requirements:

  • This position will be located at the Cambridge, MA site and will not have the ability to be located remotely. This position will not require travel as defined by the business (domestic and/ or international).

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Enzymology or a related field with 1+ years of experience with relevant laboratory research experience through employment, internships or co-operative study programs Or minimum of a master’s degree with 0-1 years of experience with relevant laboratory research experience through employment, internships or co-operative study programs

  • Solid understanding of protein function and enzyme mechanism; experience with biochemical and/or biophysical assay development for protein target and small molecule inhibitor characterizations as well as protein-ligand binding interactions

  • Strong technical ability at the bench, an eagerness to learn new things, and the willingness to tackle challenging scientific questions

  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams

  • Experience with one of more of the following: fluorescence-based assay techniques (e.g. HTRF, FP, or quench assays) and label-free technologies (e.g. SPR, ITC, DSF, or mass spectrometry)

  • Proven ability to analyze, interpret and present data in a clear and concise manner

  • Excellent team-player, with strong communication and inter-personal skills

Desirable Requirements:

  • Hands-on experience with automation to enable medium to high throughput assays
