Location: Basel, Switzerland Full time, onsite, #LI-Onsite The Immunology Department (IMM-DA) at Novartis has a strong track record in discovery and development of novel therapies for the treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases and unmet immunological conditions. We have bold ambitions to transform the lives of millions through innovative immune therapies. We are now looking for an experienced Immunologist for our Translational Research (TR) group to join us on this journey.

About the Role

The TR group is an integrated group of scientists with strong expertise in in vivo Pharmacology, Molecular Pathology, disease-relevant in vitro models, and Data Science. The TR group conducts preclinical experiments and uses patient data and human biosamples to support the compound portfolio of IMM-DA end-to-end.
The candidate will lead a lab and generate key translational insights on the next wave of therapies for patients with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in preclinical in vivo pharmacology and will closely collaborate with the other disciplines in the TR group to successfully advance novel therapies into the clinics. Industry experience in drug discovery of biologic and low molecular weight therapies is of advantage.

Your responsibilities and accountabilities will include:

• Generate preclinical in vivo and translational data in support of key portfolio projects.
• Address key translational research questions for novel drugs related to mechanisms of action, asset differentiation, in vivo PK/PD relationship and exploratory biomarkers from animal studies and/or patient samples.
• Represent TR on program discovery and development teams. Lead a target discovery effort or drug discovery project from a translational perspective. Contribute to the overall department’s strategic direction with special focus on increasing the impact of translational research approaches in drug discovery and development.
• Lead internal and external collaborations to increase team capabilities or address a strategic need.
• Take initiative to identify, pilot and internalize emerging technical approaches that may drive increased value for portfolio execution.
• Prepare and/or direct the preparation and review of Preclinical Pharmacology sections of IBs, INDs, abstracts, and manuscripts.

What you will bring to the role/minimum requirements:

• Ph.D. or MD/PhD with PostDoc in Immunology, Pharmacology, or related discipline plus >5 years of professional experience in academia or industry.
• Expert understanding of in vivo disease models and experience in performing mechanistic studies in rodent models of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases is required.
• Immunology/autoimmune disease knowledge, including target and mechanism knowledge (e.g. SLE, arthritis, atopic dermatitis) and awareness of clinical standard of care.
• Understanding of fundamentals and practice of the drug discovery process in pharma industry is of advantage.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Self-motivated and collaborative, with excellent time management and interpersonal skills.
